Orange is usually the headlight switch feed.
Find a wiring diagram ( back of sticky's book) To work out what's gone wrong. You might need to bell it out to be certain

It's aluminium and can be polished to a really good shine.

Think about it this way 2 miles from home is a bloody long push If you can fix it in 10-20 mins using tools and spares available it's better than waiting for the AA or someone to bring the kit. Watch what crank you buy- sometimes the casings need a trench put in them to get the crank to fit (My MEC 60x110 did).
