Felt a rear wobble on the A63 coming back from Cleethorpes. Thought i'd got a flat rear but all looked well when I managed a "controlled" stop (spooky at 60 mph). Further inspection showed all four of the wheel studs had sheared. I'm puzzled as to the cause ?

You're one lucky fella !
Last year I noticed a knocking on mine and inspection revealed ALL 4 hub studs scythed 3/4 the way through. It was due to nylocs not gripping. (Normally I discard nylocs after 1 on and off but this time I hadn't.) Holes on tubeless rim had elongated and had been rocking.
How are the holes on your rims?

F@@kin'ell - that's scarey!
Well saved...
Loose nuts are the likely cause I'd say.

I had the same in france, about half way through an 2 missing nuts..... i didn't realise but it seemend to slightly knock unless i went faster! .. so i did :? i only noticed when we stopped for everyone to catch up!
but its the nuts loosing up, just enough for it to move, and once the rim holes ovals,it moves it backwards n forwards cutting the studs, always double check n replace nylocks now... plus thick paint or powder coating rims tend to soften/wear n cause it?

I've done about 300 miles since a full re-spray so suspect the paint on the rims/hub may be the cause. I reckon the paint flaked away (or softened) after tightening and left the rim loose on the hub, then the rims sliced through the studs.

Out of interest I checked the nuts that hold the rims together and got another half turn on all of them.

The rim holes look worn and a bit ragged but not elongated.

New studs on order and back on the road for less than a fiver.........I hope !!

There was a fella that had a puncture in his car, he jacked his wheel up & removed his wheel. As he put it down he lost all his hub nuts down the drain. He was devastated as he didn't have any spares. Then he heard ''Oi mate'' He looked up at the top of this high security wall & a man had managed to poke his head over the top. ''Just seen what you did there mate. Now, take one nut off each of the other three wheels & put them on your spare wheel. If you take it easy you'll get home no bother''.

''Thats a fantastic idea!" replied the stricken motorist. ''Tell me, what place is that you're in?'' The fella said ''it's a mental home for the criminally insane, but I do not deserve to be here as I am totally innocent. They said I murdered my best friend but it was n't me I'm not mad!"

''You know what'' said the car driver ''If you come up with ideas like that then I'm inclined to believe you. Leave it with me & I'll get onto the home office to review your case, ok?''

''That would be great'' exclaimed the inmate''

So the fella took one wheel nut from each of the other wheels, secured the spare wheel, and put the flat tyre & jack away. Suddenly, as he was going to wave goodbye & get in his car, a half brick smacked him right on the back of the head, knocking him over! Startled, with claret p1551ing out between his fingers as he felt a gaping wound in his head, he looked up at the top of the wall as the inmate shouted ''You won't forget now will you?" :D

Remember, always check your nuts, and don't ignore odd noises.

Shaun.
