Painting advice...again.

Thinking about adding some colour to the scooter over the off season. Im going to respary the whole scoot in the same colur as present but add some pepper white lines and flashes, also need to think about a colour for a pinstripe which will edge the flashes and lines. Prev I have only sprayed the one colour so no experience of adding another colour on top or pinstriping....

I have been pleased with the results of the prev spray but it wasnt perfect with some orange peel in places. This was my fault as i didnt rub down either the base coat or the laquer when applying or mop the finished thing with a compound. This time i have more time to spend so would like to try and get a better finish.

Really im looking for advice on a good step by step process to get the desired effect. I have in my head whats the right way to go but iv probably missed a stage out or got it wrong. Also there may be better ways/order to doing pinstrping and secondary colurs?


Using Base coat & laquer: Colour Aston Mart old english pewter, Mini pepper white & pin colour tbd
(using side pannels in this example)

1/ Spray pewter base coat (grab coat + 2 further coats)

2/ Rub down lightly with 1200 (panel wipe & tac)

3/ Mask off areas for white to be sparayed (panel wipe & tac)

4/ Spray white base coat (grab coat + 2 further coats)

5/ Remove masking tape (how long should you wait to do this, until it has gone off or before its fully dried?)

6/ Rub down lightly with 1200 making sure not to go through edge (panel wipe & tac)

7/ Mask off all panel apart from pinstriping and spray 3rd colour (grab coat plus 2 further coats)

8/ Remove tape (same question as 5?)

9/ Rub down lightly with 1200 making sure not to go through edge (panel wipe & tac)

10/ Spray 3 coats laquer rubbing down with 1200 between each

11/ Mop pannel with approiate compound

12/ Polish with correct compound

2/ Rub down lightly with 1200 (panel wipe & tac) Whatever you do, DON'T rub down the pewter, it's a metalic and you will ruin it. Use a tack rag before and keep the dust out.

Okay cheers for that. What do you suggest i do with the edge of the white on the pewter as this will be 3 coats high? Do I just leave this for the laquer to cover or can you rub this down? Also should i add the pinstripe to break up the 2 colours on the pewter side as if i put it on the white then there will be 6 paint layers as an edge into the pewter?

Agreed about the danger of blead under masking tape.

Syd, I don't think you will need 3 coats of the white, it only has to be thick enough to cover without being patchy as the lacquer will provide the protection. I would probably add the pinstripes to the pewter and concider extra coats of clear if you want a perfectly flat finish.

Sounds like a good idea to use the correct tape so will go that way. How long would you leave between lacquer when flatting them. when i have spayed lacquer prev i have left them about 20 mins between coats so they were pretty green but then i wasnt flatting back. Do i now need to leave each coat of lacquer to go right off before i flat with 1200? Its not an issue doing a coat a day and then leaving to dry if i need to.

No need to flat between the coats of lacquer syd, just de-nib if there are any specks of dust but other wise just leave to go off then add another coat. All the flatting will be done when all clear coats have been applied.

And, regardless of what masking tape you use, make sure the edges are pressed down really well, a wall paper roller works as does the back of a spoon.
