Is it really necessary or does it not make a major diffrence?

i depends how much you want to cut a hole or if you need to for clearance and i am assuming you mean for the fitting of a larger carb
....but you can look at it two ways ,

hole = fresh cooler air ,

or no hole = hot dusty air from under the panels that has already been preheated via the fan and cylinder cowlings

I don't have a hole for mine. I've just knocked it out a bit so there's more of a gap between panel and carb. A couple of holes near the front of the panel, so you've got some air going in, was what the dynoman recommended when I had mine set up. It runs alright without, so I've not bothered.

Run it without a panel on and try and see what you think, been pondering over this myself, mine does seem ok, I have my carb as far back as it will go so a decent gap but i get a few quids worth of oil over my rear runner after a run, at least if i cut a hole in my panel my jeans would soak it up :D

Use one of these matey - straight through no messing:
