TS1 Crankcase Conversion

Had one in for a dyno the other week.....cylinder porting was standard, but inlet was converted to crankcase induction. Zero power benefits over a standard TS1, although a great piece of engineering and always an interesting things to tinker with stuff.

Strangely, he was running a GP200 gearbox with something like 21/46 gearing....he said it flew in 3rd, but 4th was like an 'overdrive'....i suspect what was happening was that he'd overgeared it, and his 3rd was acting like a 4th gear would....and 4th gear would be practically defunct. We suggested he re-geared it to bring 4th gear into play.....but i think he'd got set in his ways and liked stretching it out in 3rd.....which seems to me like he's just missing a gear. You could see on the dyno it took a lot of revving to get going in 1st, and then 3rd gear was hitting 4th gear speeds.....i doubt 4th was much use on the road....or at least not as much use as it should be??

He aslo had a spare cylinder so we took some pics.....considering the conversion work, the rest of the ports were surprisingly tame......interesting project though, and nice to see something different:

Daz from Darlo has one and it flies , he was leading lcgb coast to coast last year , and nearly won it it until running out of fuel!!!

That motor does pull the ratio's that daz uses! I should know because Mossy (Donny Hunters) and my self developed it! The cylinder on the motor now is not tuned timing wise but obviously has had extensive work around transfer passages. This motor has infact won the LCGB coast to coast in around 1996 and pissed it and I mean pissed it. That was when we ran from Whitby to Morecombe without stops. It is very torquey however I believe the dyno states otherwise, but until you've ridden it you wont believe how tractable and how smooth the power delivary is. Martin Cook from Chiselspeed done the original work IN 1990/91. This motor has done thousands of miles since first being put on the road in 1991 and is pretty much as it started out back in the day.
I was reluctant to let it go but as Daz is a close friend and club member I new it would be in good hands and we could continue to develop it should we desire without interferance from third party's.
Probably the best kept secret in scootering, well until now.

i cannot remember the actual dyno figures now ,but they were just average for a ts1
but interestingly,and after studying his graphs.....we noticed that both his BHP and TORQUE figures were higher in second gear...
and the reason for this is due to his exceedingly tall gearing.....which was 4.38/1

as you are aware ,most dyno runs are done in third gear,but because of the tall gearing,his third had in fact a comparable fourth gear ratio.... :shock:
and so with hind sight ,we should have maybe printed out his 2nd gear run... :D
the difference may have been only 1 or 2 BHP at most ,but there was a difference.
may be dan could print these up...
extremes of gear ratios one way or the other do affect the dyno results,because of the way that inertia dynos work and calculate the results.
it was very interesting to see and dyno this scoot,as its the first one like this (crankcase reed and tall gearing etc)that we have dyno,d
we still maintain that it would be even better if the gearing was altered a bit ...but Daz seems very happy with it as is.
but your right ....it does have good potential for future development..... :D
