many years ago I had a similar situation and I thought initially it was ring failure.
It transpired the actual piston had cracked badly- new piston cured it completely!
Would be interested to hear what it was IDC

Took it apart on Saturday and it was the eye of one of the gudgeon pin circlips that has broken off, travelled around the barrel and finally wedged itself into the piston just above the top ring jamming the rings. The rest of the circlip is still in position. The barrel (cast iron) only has light damage with a couple of little chips on the edge of one of the transfers and you can see little marks on the head where the offending piece has spent some time prior to it getting lodged in the piston. Now to strip the crank out to see if anything else was damaged.
