Hi all, Riding home last night and all of a sudden the engine made a funny noise (hard to describe), runs extremely rough and slows right down and would only keep going if I kept the revs high. When pulling away it was like trying to pull away in 3rd or 4th. I was not far from home so I crawled home in 2nd and 3rd and as soon as I dropped the revs the engine died instantly.
When I turn the engine over without firing it up there are no strange grinding or rattling noises.
Has anyone out there experienced a similar problem and does this sound like an oil seal failure?

....and yes there has been a strange smell to the emissions recently, I put it down to the cheaper two stroke I bought, D'oh!

cheers

could be a number of things first thing stick a latex gloved finger in the tailpipe if it black and wet with oil then theres a fair chance its a seal also check the oil level and plug colour if that reviels nothing start the scoot if you can and hold it on tickover then drain the oil as the oil seeps out the reves should rice as air is drawn in through the seal also if its burning oil it should stink and there should be a white cloud of it if its burning in large amounts

the funny noise could be a broken ring as you said it happened suddenly with any noise i would investigate PRIOR to starting the engine again

Cheers Shocky, it will be stripped over the weekend. I was just trying to find out if it sounded like the seal so I could get all the bits today in order to get it sorted quicker. The strange smell has led me to think it may be that, could be a red herring though. It's all good fun :)

i would suspect broken rings with the loss of power, you would see very little loss with just an oil seal, but either you will have to pull it down and change both just to be sure,

Describing the noise..........
Imagine the noise the engine makes when cruising not thrashing the knackers off, well all of a sudden the tone dropped and sounded rough.
I would not say the power dropped off too much as it ran to get me home but I did not open it up, it was just when I dropped the revs that it would cut out.
All will be revealed over the weekend all being well. :)

cheers for the input

Sounds like a blown head gasket...
Life shouldn't be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty, well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, loudly proclaiming: "WOW, WHAT A RIDE"

My GP200 smoked like hell until the gearbox oil ran low, also it had a bit of a funny smell, I assume because of the different type of oil being burned.
Best of luck...
