The only thing I noticed on the full DC as a down side is
1. The gel batteries need topping up since they loose power over time. If not then they will run empty and won't recharge
2. Even with the ignition off the battery is live and if you lock the front brake with a grip lock the brake light will be on. (if you have it connected to rear light)
3. You need to really isolate all terminals. The smallest contact short-circuits the bike

doesn't really matter but when I add the extra wire I use a black or blue wire (whatever I have that wont get mixed up with the white red or green) That's the one to earth. I think you are all overcomplicating this. I haven't used gel batteries but always use the small alarm wet acid Batteries. I use the ignition to isolate everything until I switch to lights. I did do a mates who used a Cam Lam LED fuel level sensor and if he parked up with low fuel it would drain so I fitted a relay that took its coil power from the lights, bit of a phaff but worked fine. Yes I killed one battery but I left the lights on when I locked it in the shed  the bike still ran had good lights but it would not hold a charge for more than a few minuets with the engine off. It still functioned as a smoother as a Capacitor does. I know some charges can recover these units but it cost more than a new battery

You also need to have a regulator fitted rather than the rectifier and be able to connect that to the loom if you want to do a roadside switch like this.

Good point, carry the old AC regulator in the tool box or better still, buy a cheap Wassel clone such as http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-12V ... 0005.m1851
