Remove bearing from magneto housing

Great, thanks for the Ideas! Cant do it at home since we have a gas cooker! I will heat it with a heat gone and try to hit the outer seal out with a engine mount.

I think that's the idea....use a gas cooker.

We've got gas also but I use one of those electric hot air paint strippers - doesn't take very long at all to get the housing hot enough to pop the bearing.

How do you avoid all the grease landing on the gas flame? Sure it will get messy.

You cant use an old engine mount or drift tool to remove the bearing only knock it in . Whether the bearing justs drops out with heat all dependings on how the bearing went in and how long its been in there, some people dont heat the housing up hot enough and the bearing gets knocked in , this can score the inner edge of the housing which holds the bearing in and no matter how hot it gets it wont drop out , you will then end up trying to knock it out from the small oil seal /flywhel side thus more than likely causing damage to the bearing. Once the old bearing is out if there are any lumps / scores around the inner smooth down with fine wet and dry before rebuilding.

I must admit that I have only used the gas hob to fit the bearing to a new mag housing,the mag housing doesn't contain any grease,so you may have a point there.

how can you hit the outer edge of bearing with an engine mount? the only contact will be the outer oil seal surely. installing maybe?

Remove the circlip,pry out the inner oil seal and heat the mag housing on a cooker/hob until it is about 100 degrees c.Next knock out the smaller oil seal,this will in turn knock out the L-shaped washer and the bearing.

What HxPaul said and if it was done right the first time (clean and installed straight), the bearing will fall right out.

Only time I ever have to force anything out is when it was put together wrong.
