self closing throttle

Now if I could only find a shop that sells split pins. Tried a B@Q megastore last evening but no joy..it would save a journey to a scooter shop, going to try hardware store on my lunch!

No I dont think so

I set it up - it didnt return very much at all, so I thought 'maybe you need to wind it up a bit' which just resulted in the spring snapping. Very frustrating as I had to make up my SR order to meet the min postage requirements with spares I dont really need, I've had to go B&Q and Halfords on seperate trips to get the required drill bit and split pin and it didnt work so all in all its probably cost me £25 odd and now its snapped. Bloody scooters :shock: :oops: :shock: :evil: :roll: :lol:

Is the idea that you tension the spring by compressing it down the length of its body?

When you offer the assembly up you can feel how much you can pre-load the spring by turning the rod before fitting the throttle wheel. Whilst the photo of the standard Spanish headset shows the original split/rolled pin, I don't like the way that these (or the nylon rollers) go a bit slack once they've been fitted and used for a while, which is why you can see that I've tapped the rod holes and fitted mine with bolts.

When you're trying to figure out the preload for the spring, it should become obvious that too much will result in the spring becoming over-stressed or coil bound, which is not good, but a lesser amount will result in sufficient preload to ensure that the throttle closes itself when the grip is released but also allows the throttle to be used/turned as normal (not over stressed).

When you get to this stage, playing with the assembly should make it all become clear.

From my memory of events its was not exactly wanting to spring back even without the wheel attached - even up to the point just before I snapped the spring. I'm wondering if there is not some other reasons its not working.

I guess an alternative, although more costly, solution would be fitting a quick action throttle.

Determine why it is not working correctly. Effectively, this is a quick action/quick return assembly but something is stopping it from working. It would be a shame to introduce another throttle mechanism and then discover that you still have the sticking point (literally)!

I have this assembly on 3 of my scoots and they all snap shut (as required to participate in classic sprint meetings).

Yup, its fixed, simple as cleaning the powder coat off the throttle tube and applying a liberal amount of copper slip to all moving parts. Its not snapping closed but gently rolling back :)

Shame I spent all that cash on the spring ha ha and maybe goes to show how much stronger the spring is in my old jetex carb?

Anyway on to the next puzzle..where's my spark gone :(
