Did this and the engine stopped! So now we're getting somewhere! Just can't find anything in headset that's loose

The pink wire with the tape looks like it's the ignition switch earth and doesn't look too clever. A break or bad connection in that wire would cause the symptoms you are having.

when running, use a short piece of wire and put it on the green and to earth/frame. If it cuts out it points to the switch area, if it doesn't there's an issue with the green wire from the CDI to the headset.

Agreed, there should be a green wire in the headset that comes out of the loom and plugs into the connector block on the lamp holder. If you look carefully you will see that that connector is liked to 1 or 2 other terminals. Start by pulling that green out and shorting it to earth as Mick1 suggested. If that kills the engine then the problem MUST be between the terminal block and the switch/earth. Is there a wire connecting with the green on the junction block? does it go to the ignition switch? If you connect your meter to that wire and a good earth in the headset, do you get close to zero ohms?mick1 wrote:when running, use a short piece of wire and put it on the green and to earth/frame. It's a process of elimination

If you have the second edition of "The complete spanners manual" by sticky,if not get a copy you'll need it.It contains all the wiring diagrams and on page 277 if you dont have a battery ( AC) or page 279 if you have a battery (DC) you'll find the diagrams for your scooter.
Okay guys, thanks for your help, job done!
it was the pinky/ red wire that Meds said! I had checked it beforehand and seemed fine but decided to strip it back and put new connectors on and hey presto! Can get it to the test station now! Once again thanks everyone for your advice.
