My mind has played on this for a long time but I still keep coming back to needing a barrel with a thicker wall. Even if you plug the stud holes and bore out, you soon run out of bore wall. Little point of going beyond the bore wall and fitting an iron liner as you still need enough meat in the barrel to run the transfers down.

What we really need is a barrel that is just BIGGER, with thicker walls, bigger transfer casting and longer barrel for long stroke increase. I'd happily sacrifice a casing and have the mouth machined off and a bigger mouth welded on (as the Germans/Austrians used to do to convert small block casings before SIL 200s became readily available). The problem I keep coming back to is barrel... and I don't really want to change to a bike barrel :(

I've spent a lot of time thinking about the barrels as well. This is where I'm headed with it. I can make these as big as anyone wants, in just about any configuration. Still in testing, this is a 186cc (64mm bore) carved from a block of aluminum. Iron liner. Transfer area is about that of an RB225. I've used just about all available area in between the studs. The next logical step is to move the studs. Weld up the base and I can put the studs any damn place I want....and build a barrel to suit. This barrel is assembled and running, but I'm currently buried in snow. Hopefully the roads are clear in the next week or two!

The other main issue we'll run into is getting the bore/stroke ratio too "over square". Big bore is gonna need big stroke or detonation is gonna be problem.

Nice work SR1, but what a lot of work.

I guess some of the limitations you elude to in your post are being addressed, such as the studs (Super Monza) and the stroke (CNC machined casings.
