My series 2 with 200 engine 25mil carb and af clubman has always been temperamental at starting. It was starting first kick now it takes 20 plus. Initially I had a carb issue which I sorted. I have checked spark it appears weak to me. So what's failing. Electrics are not my strong point could it be stator ? CDI? I

Yes could be any of those.
First thing I'd check would be the plug gap, then try a new plug and work back from there. Cap, HT lead, CDI, remove the green to the loom from the CDI to eliminate a short or faulty switch. Swap the CDI for a known good one. Get a cheap multi meter and check the values on the stator wire against the published values.
If all that checks out then you're probably back to carburation.
