Run in Period

Guys.........what's the suggested 'take it easy run in period' IF you have rebuilt a lammy engine with new bearings and seals and put new piston rings in. Its a GP 200 stage 4 conventional steel barrell engine by the way

The motocross guys would tell you to get your bike up to full temperature and then let it cool down fully to cold, and do this twice.

I like to do this and for rings take it easy for 100 miles or so.

I'd go with the same, around a 100 miles or so to bed everything in but vary the speed interspersing some short blasts which will help the rings bed in (so I'm told).

I think the motocross advice probably relates to ceramic or Nicasyl plated bores rather than bottom ends though

Unless I was certain that the piston to bore clearance was, say, 4 thou. of an inch (that's about 0.9mm) I'd do a hell of a lot longer than that on an iron barrel. The manual said 1000 miles for a reason. But the way you run it in is the really important issue.

Nicasil/alloy barrels are a different case entirely.

He only changed the rings Paul, no mention of a new bore or piston otherwise I would agree

then theres the new bearings and seals to contend with too.

So it's effectively had a complete strip and rebuild with new rings too.

Personally if it was a new top end too i always say the 1000 mile rule, if though as above its only had bearings seals and rings then I would say 100 miles for the rings doing the usual building up speeds for the first 50, then short! bursts of speed intermittently for the next 50 while all the time increasing that top speed.

additionally at 250 miles I would do a gear oil change to remove any bits produced from the bearings bedding in, but that's just me.
