R1 shocks or escort

That was with an Escort fitted. I've only done 20 or so miles with the R1 whcih is fitted with a 180lb spring and the difference is amazing and I haven't touched the preload or rebound settings yet.

Yes, Col, I can testify as to your bouncing rear :P Are you sure your shock was an Escort? There's a lot of fake Escorts around.

I once saw a post from Ian Frankland (Terrible Taff), I think, which talked about the bushes on R1s and Hagons being wrong. The correct bush should have the inner part wider so when the shock mount nut is tightened, it tightens on the inner allowing the shock to "float."

Personally, I wouldn't use an R1 shock out of choice again because of this issue with the bushes. There are lots of decent well made rear shocks for Lammies these days so why risk it?

Having said all this, at present on my cutdown, I have a Hagon (one of the recalled ones with re-machined bushes) but I would never ride two up on that :bigsm:

I can vouch for the fact that it said Escort on the box, it's chrome plated and was of the correct 300mm length, got a similar one on the LiS but they both came off ebay sellers so I guess it's anyones guess as to authenticity ;)

Before fitting an R1 check the length as they are not adjustable in length i found them to short for a series 1/2

I've used quite a few R1 shocks and always used the nylon bushes, spacing washers and don't over tighten them. I can never understand the settings, I know there's a sheet but can't get my head around it. I'm about 14 stones and have the shock on my TV S3, normally ride one up, so any suggestions on the settings?

Indian Escort ones are decent shocks IMO but Yam have to be better if you set them and put them on right. Normally the Yam ones just seem to feel better for me and they look good.

got an R1 shock on the "pacemaker" re bushed by a mate , nylon i think...he knocked them up at work for nowt...and a 225lb spring by "shocky" off here. best rear shock ive ever had on a scooter. i run an Escorts indian one on the GP , and its great for the money also . we used to do 2"s up all over the place with an Escort shock on the back, and ive never had one fail. one is an expensive good looking shocker that works, the other is a shocker that works.

Escorts are a great budget shock IMHO and perform and last well for the price. But compared to a Taffy, R1 or Pro-Tec, very basic and in a completely different league.

As Toddy says the R1 is too short for a S1/S2 with a 295-300mm shock the back-end sits veriy noticably way too low.

Moved over to nylon bushes for my R1 as the eurethane ones did not last. I'd say spacer washers and 'Chiggy's' m16 nylock 1/2 nuts are the way to go with the R1.

The Taffspeed/Pro-Tec are great. Anyone tried the Sacci/Cambridge 'Ultimate' yet. That is height adjustable so will suit S1/S2. (Wish I had the budget for one :-( )

Mine have been in for many thousands of miles, without a problem.
