When I was coming home from Lincoln I developed a problem just outside Liverpool.

When accelerating I had to go steady and anything over 4K gears would disengage with a clunking sound. Dropping the throttle back it would be ok.

If I accelerated too quickly it went out of gear.

Any pointers before I strip the engine?

Hi Bilko, was it when under hard accelarating like jumping out of gear/missing?
If so more than likely to be your front sprocket/shoulder worn and spinning on itself, i had same sypmtoms earlier in the year.

Aaaah never thought about that.

I was thinking of the gearbox

Yes, I open the throttle hard gearing misses. There's no jolting or jumping like a loose gear cable.

Thanks Baz.

EDIT:

Tried to kick it over for the first time since I got back from Lincoln and the kickstart dropped hard without engaging.

Thought there was no oil in my haste to check. Of course, I undid the level plug.
