i bought one some time back and fitted a cigerette lighter to see if it would power a sat nav direct,it powered it but at tick over it was very erratic,speaking to some of the electrical guys at work they suggested fitting a small capacitor in line which has an effect of a small battery and dampens the electrical wave peaks n troughs....sure enough it works a treat if you dont want to fit a battery which of course is another option

Do bare in mind that a capacitor will only be of assistance if the device you want to power has no onboard battery of its own i.e. rev counters. For a satnave or phone a capacitor is not required. If however a battery is used, you can continue to charge phones even when the engine is not running (subject to charge level). Even a 1.2 Amp battery will have enough capacity to charge an iphone or 2 from flat and is small enough to be mounted out of the way somewhere at any angle, even upside down.

If i were to buy a metal toolbox? would it cause problems as the outer part of the the cigarette lighter is metal and that is where the earthing point is connected too, would this cause a short?

No, the frame is used as an earth but you will need to make sure that the toolbox is connected to earth properly or run a seperate earth wire. My cigarette lighter socket has 2 spade connectors which is just as well as my toolbox is fibre glass

i havnt sorry...i used a spare one from work.
ive been looking at some small alarm rechargeable batteries on fleabay,this would do the same job as like mentioned previous the nav goes off if the engine isnt running which isnt always ideal
if you go on mb,s site and search capacitor,you can see the spec of the one he sells.where you get one from after that is up to you

i fitted a bike battery to my legsheild spare wheel carrier then ran a wire with fuse holder from the dc outlet on the bgm to the battery then earthed the battery to one of the holes in the spare wheel carrier when down halfords got a fag lighter wired it an now can power sat nav gps moby charger pump up air bed etc the battery holds 13 volts all the time

and when he hits 88 the flux capicitor takes him back to his bedroom in 77 banging one out to his X-ray specs album cover....
