Warning

The 30mm PHBH Jetting that I said was being tested is running WEAK on the transition from the pilot jet to the needle at ¼ throttle; it does not “pink” but is very, very weak and liable to blow a piston! Even going at 40 mph

Am going to try an X4 needle to see if it resolves the problem.
DO NOT TRY THIS SETTING YET

Everything is fitted and it is timed up and running. The pwk has a jjh needle on the middle clip and it's jetted with the biggest jets I have, 48 pilot and a 152 main iirc. It does feel very rich but I will do several plug chops to keep an eye on it.

Running up to Scarborough for a few days on Monday, anybody know of a trusted dyno close to there that can check my afr?

As Andy Francis is showing one of the "New" Avanti Clubmans at the Euro I thought it only fair to let you have a look at what is on the way! The only information I am giving out at the moment is: It is in 3 parts, Stub Manifold, header pipe in Stainless steel, and Silencer as per the following photo's. The one on my bike only has mild steel header pipe.

seen this pipe at the euro on andys stall

was very impressed with it and the quality. will be hoping to get one myself as soon as out

like the fact it has stub manifold and slip joints.
just need to save up now :)

Hi Dave, no waiting for X4 needles to come in, in any event I do not have any time this week to play with jetting having spent 16 - 20 hours last week!

Ron I've got an iron barrel 230 with very similar port timings to the Avanti kit and I've ended up with AV266 and X13 on 1st clip with a clubman. Thats slightly rich around the transition so may be very near correct with an expansion on say clip 2.

980 miles on mine now after riding down through the Netherlands to Belgium and back again. The engine ran like a dream except for when we experienced the headwind from hell and the weight and bulk of the kit I was carrying (panniers, 2 wide bags on the rear rack lpus to other bags) made the progress difficult on the 4.7 gearing. The main problem was following a horse box for miles at 45 mph which was a bit too slow to be on the power and I would have to drop down to 3rd from time to time. If the horse box had been going a bit quicker I think it would have been ok. When the wind shifted to side on I hit 70mph catching my riding companions up after I got caught by a set of lights :oops: The ride back along the coast rode was wind free and was a pure joy, no problem keeping up with a TS1, RT225 and a DAC250 (2 up). The CHT was steady at 175 degrees at a constant 55 mph on the gps. Unfortunately I grounded the exhaust manifold on a speed bump near the Hook of Holland on the return leg which caused a leak on the flange and it made it run weak. I got home safely by richening the mixture screw and keeping the speed down to 45mph max and watching the CHT which didn't go over 170 degrees 8-)

Now it's run in I'm looking forward to doing some WOT plug chops and maybe trying a PWK 28/30 with a filter.

I was/am very frustrated to have not been able to take mine because of a failed big end bearing on my crank, which went a week before setting off for Brittany + Belgium. What made it even more frustrating was that the plug colour, head colour and piston crown colour showed it all to be on the richer side of spot-on, which felt great on the road and I had 100% faith in getting me to both and home.

All in all I was lucky that the crank failed here, close to home, but I was gutted not to be taking the Avanti away. Thankfully, the bore is still like new (remote filter) and I think that I may be able to sort the raised element on the spigot, which should see this back on the road before long.

PS - The crank that failed punched part of the big-end eye and needle rollers out through the back of the casing!!! No, fault of the kit but I will think long and hard about what crank will be fitted during the rebuild :(

It was a MEC Race crank, which had served me well already but showed no sign of wear or heat issues when I checked it over before fitting the Avanti, 1500 km earlier. However, picking up bits of big-end eye from between my feet in the layby makes me think that all was not well. Indeed, the way the back end came off the big-end eye makes me wonder if the fracture point had not started from one of the oil feeded slots that are cut into the back of the big-end.

Don't get me wrong, I rate MEC Race cranks for engines that are not mega stressed, however, I like to build motors that have had as many of the weak links removed as possible. Soo what crank to try next?! I'm still struggling to beat SIL webs with decent uprated rod and big-end bearing!
