I think it was to do with the ever increasing EU regulation on the light output from a motorcycle headlight. The rectangle GP unit does not through enough light but a round one does. I think I read that in Scootering years ago or it may have been a dream caused by eating too much cheese before bed time.Doom Patrol wrote:I'd love to know the story behind those headsets. What did they do, drag out some old moulds they had left from the clear out of Innocenti and think it would be a good idea? Seems a bit bizarre. I suppose they could have been trying to sell it as some sort of new model.

Nothing to do with the light output as the serveta lince changed to a larger glass because the threepenny bit sx headset couldnt cast a big enough beam. of course modern halogen conversions can give exceptable output now so the headlight size isnt an issue anymore (with plastic lense). i personally have never seen these sil sx headsets and im sure the reasons for their use are lost in time or would need someone like Ray kemp to answer. my guess it was purely cosmetic. the SX headset casting may have found its way to a factory in India or pakistan or they may have just made a sandcast mold to "update" the design. if they had 900 employees at SIL in Lucknow they must have spent their 20 hour days doing something for the sake of it because they sure as hell werent building GPs.

I've seen the racers use them on GP's...are you saying they make the ride height lower then?

the only ones i heard of were a batch of GP"s destined for turkey with these handle bars fitted (red and silver models ) so maybees a local request. i think they look ok. the indian "j" range (sunny?) had these fitted as well.

That makes a lot more sense now if they were making them anyway.

I'm sure I saw one on ebay a while back that was allegedly a japanese import with a SIL with a SX style headset
