Swapped out a bog standard SIL stator for a modified MB one, which I'd converted for DC, and want to use the std SIL as a spare. Apart from carrying out the DC mod, I don't really know my way around the stator plate too well, so what is there that I could or should I do to it to make it more reliable or just to improve it and what checks should I make?

Turn On, Tune In, Cop out!
If you went and bought new enamal coated wire then re wound the lighting bobbins, fitted new leads and connectors, re-rivited all the dodgy rivets that secure the earthing points, replaced the LT coil with a Vespa one, you would have a top quality stator... And for less than the price of a BGM.

Was it you that started a thread about stator rebuilding? I don't suppose you have the link?

and not only that, but you can use thicker wire to get more power, just dont forget to alternate the bobbings winding

I like the idea of this challenge but have a few questions...
Where do I get the wire?
What size wire?
How do you alternate the windings?
How many windings?
Which one is the LT coil and what do I ask for?

Out of interest its says Steelbird on the pickup (trash or not?), is this also known as the trigger?

Yes have to agree with you. Thicker wire can be used for a dc conversion. It's a trade off between volts and amps the wattage remains pretty much unchanged.

you alternate by winding the 1st 1 clockwise then the wire goes onto the next 1 and its wound anticlockwise and so on till all 4 are done
so basicly the wire goes from the stator earth/centre tap then round all the bobbins alternating as you go then off the last coil to yer regulator
the lt coil uses much thinner wire to get a higher voltage.
