Hi all,
I'm restoring a GP and want to use original bits where possible so I have some dirty old bits that need to be made clean.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do with the following - type of plating, and finish or even blast cleaning, it's a bit of a list I'm afraid but any help would be appreciated.
69 DL 200 very early electronic.
Richie
1.Gp Fork links
2.GP Headset clamp
3.Cable guide (behind choke lever)
4.Disk ‘I’ Cap.
5.Rear hub nut & locking plate.
6.Bump stop washer/plate.
7.Choke lever nut and washer.
8.Rear brake pedal.
9.Rear frame grill spacers.
10.Panel clips and plate.
11.Speedo holder.
12.Headlight rim.
13.Horn allen cap screws.
14.Disk brake actuator.
15.Gear tie bar, selector arm, swivel etc.
16.Clutch arm.
17.Fork link bolts.
18.Lower steering race dust covers.
What type of plating??

If you can edit your post and number the items, I and others could give you our opinions more easily without having to type out all the items in full as not everyone will be familiar with the original finishes to these items. A year of manufacture would also be useful as the finishes to GP parts changed through the production run...........

Doing the exact same thing to the same scoot ('69 22/2 barnfind). See my post on the Scooter BBS: http://scooterbbs.net/bbs/showthread.php?t=92267
So far I have degreased and dumped in molasses solution to remove surface rust, next step is scotch wheel, polish/tumble and zinc. I sure others have different ideas--best call your local plating shop and see what they recommend.
Good luck!

I need to know and replace the original finish, if I ask my local platers they'll just say what do you want?
Thanks anyway

This is purely from experience of stripping down old scooters and looking carefully before restoring so as I have never restored a GP I'm not certain about the panel clips.

I would agree with all the above reply except for the zinc plated items ask for BZP (Bright Zinc Plated), I believe there is a difference but check with your chosen plating works. Some of us here use BZP as we are assured it will last longer than chrome and can be polished (used on Rear brake pedals etc and high mortality areas.
Also No 2 was silver painted sometimes and No 17 zinc plated.
Again from my experience of dismantling and rebuilding scoots.
In the early years all items were chrome or Cadmium plated but the latter being very poisonous was changed to zinc in the early 60's I believe..........

I've just noticed what I'd written for 17, it should have said zinc, I must have read it as fork links.
I've never seen a factory painted headset clamp though, I'm not saying they never were, but I haven't seen one.

Just rebuilding a 1969 (yes reg 1969) SX150 which has been in someones shed or something (a right rustheap) and the headset clamp is a dull silver (painted), so that's where I got that from but most others seem to be plain, as you mention.
