i remember there was a big thing about the stainless tubeless wheels on the lcgb site sometime ago, i seem to remember "Sticky" of spanners guide.. looking into it. As i have ss ones from scootrs on mine i am concerned if there was or is a danger due to them breaking, is this still the case or was it a bad batch from that competitor of theirs in the same country?

Also, i have a rear 100/90 but it was their ver 1 which i think got recalled - cant remmber to be sure, but was wondering how safe they are to put on, this isnt stainless but i have conti navs on this one and also liked the thought of a bigger tyre, anybody? This is to go onto a 78 Sil GP and i remember the fit was very awkward, does anyone use this size, if so how do you tend to get around it?

It would seem that SS isn't suitable for use as a Lambretta wheel and I've seen too many cracked ones to even think about fitting them. Do yourself a favour and use steel rims and have them chromed, if you desire ;)

Sorry to differ but I've had SS split rims on my scoot for about 18mths and absolutely no probs. Got them from resurrection in Dec 07 :!: :!:

I'd use S/S split rims but having seen first hand the force required to fit tyres on tubeless rims then I'd avoid S/S tubeless as the outer rim is easily cracked by the tyre levers.

Lucky boy, so far so good but sooner or later they may still crack, but hey it's your choice. I would avoid, I've seen them cracked and can show you a pic of some that came from your supplier.

Rog ...have you not seen the pics in the scootering press / forums plus Sticky's detailed investigation into them.......
Why knowing that would you put your life on the line, doesn't make sense?

I'm fairly sure all the hooha was about mild steel tubless rims, Sticky's investigation certaily was. The problem as I recall was that tubeless rims are formed by 'rolling' which causes 'thinning' on the bends. Split rims are pressed and do not suffer from the thinning problem. I accept there is a potential risk with any stanless product but personally I am happy to continue using mine with regular checks.

I appreciate your concern but am continuing to use them with very regular checks as, it seems, are others on here. When the issue first arose I had just had stainless split rims fitted, and so, was very concerned. I spoke directly with Bruce at Resurrection Scooters (they supplied machine) who assured me that the problem was at that time due to 'a small batch of rims produced by an alternative supplier due to a shortage from the normal manufacturer and as mine had been fitted before the offending batch had entered the country, I should not be too concerned but to be on the safe side check them regularly and if in doubt contact Resurrection'.He was also involved with the 'Scootering' tests.
As has also been noted this appears to affect tubeless S/S rims more directly due to the manufacturing process.
As an after thought, I had a rear wheel come loose in May but even that didn't cause any adverse effects on the rim.
I consider that the risk is probably the same as having a blowout and bearing that in mind ALWAYS inspect tyres, pressures, and rims before and during any trip.
Finally I note other incidents with these rims and this only re-inforces my safety awareness.

is there any difference between split rims then and tubeless SS in this respect?

Also, when they go do they tend to show cracks do you see them or do they just go.

Finaly, anyone know if other factors play a part in their safety? eg pillion, speed, distance travelled at the time.

I already had to change one bloody set of scootrs the ver 1 because Scootrs informed me they may be defective, they then offered SS before all this came out. So noooooooooooo not again :(

Not really concerned with the "shiny" aspect, at the time i naively thought stainless was stronger. I understand the "give" factor in SS now.

But everyone says "Split rims" arent tubless rims seen as a safer alternative now?
