I've just had a quote to spray my Li panels (2 sidepanels, legshield, front mudguard, rear runners and headset) for £250 if I prep and prime the panels. I'm going for a plain colour - he suggested 2 pack paint. Said he could do cellulose if I wanted it period correct, but recommended 2 pack for durability.

Does this sound a reasonable price? Just want a second opinion really. He said he could turn the work round in 3 days, which sounded better than me faffing round with rattle cans.

the question for me is do you know how to prep and prime properly? I only say that as if the paint goes awry he has every advantage to blame the prep work?

The other question is that if you CAN prep and prime properly, you can also paint properly surely?

Prepping & priming I can do OK. It's just time consuming. I don't have the equipment, space or time to spray the top coat, especially 2 pack paint. He quoted about £800 for him to do the prep as well. I'm just wondering if the prices are reasonable or if I should look elsewhere. A PM would do if sprayers rates need to remain private....

I would say that's a good price.

Are the panels in good knick? if so then a trip to the powder coaters might be an alternative, might even be worth giving them to a panel beater to sort out before the coaters. Personally I'd be worried about spending £250 for a professional coat of paint to be applied over rattle can applied primer. The tope coat is only ever going to be as good as the preparation.

Somebody I know used lambrettaupgrades and was a very good job this is what they quote on there website
[ We can do a full respray on a complete Lambretta (approx 25 items) for £700 including paint. This includes prep, undercoat, top coat and 3 layers of lacquer and final polish. This is for 2 colours, including metallics. This does not include blasting. Candy colours and metalflake extra.] seems a very good deal hope this helps

Thanks for the replies. The Lambrettaupgrades offer is a pretty good deal, but my panels are not in great condition and will need shipping off to the other side of the country for Lambrettaupgrades to do their thing.

I'm looking forward to getting the paint done, then I can ride it. I've finished the rear runners and the front mudguard, which have come up well. Legshields and sidepanels next. I've used etch primer on the bare steel, then filler prime for the top coat. I'm getting the paint from a local body shop suppliers, and I must say the quality of the paint is in a different league to the cheap stuff I've used in the past.

800 prepped and painted sounds very reasonable.

And no worries about compatibility.

The guy who painted one of mine point blank refused to paint the legshields and side panels that I'd prepped and primed. I used to be a paint sprayer and know what I'm doing. He quite rightly said that if the paint started to fall off or flake after a few months I'd be going back for a refund. He painted my Lammy but had every thing blasted 1st and he redid the whole thing. 6 years later the paint is still in good nick. I'd let someone do the whole bike if I were you.
