Rebuilding my brother-in-laws Mugello 186 motor ant the cylinder head has a lot of pitting etc from when the small end bearing fell apart. Can anyone tell me if this can be clean up and used or is it better to get a new cylinder head?

I'd say clean up and use.

Maybe give it a skim and use a thicker head gasket

i'd leak test it before use. suck in a bit of air and you may hole the piston

If you have a dremel with small sanding cylinders

don't use the tool but just sand the squish band to knock of the sharp bits . Then finish off with some finer 200 grit. The sharp edges will promote detonation if the engine is prone to it. It doesn't have to be like a baby's bum but the smoother the better. This method involves time, effort and dust.

Cheers for advice so far. I have managed to get out the garage today and clean up the head but still not 100% happy with it. Some of the damage is deep. Has anyone ran one like this without any problems. If it was for me I would run it as is but it's not my money so need to make sure.

Cheers Muppet,
That is one option, he is on a tight budget so don't really want to buy a new head.

You should really have the damaged part cut off the head and then run a thicker head gasket to make up the height difference. I'm sure after all that sanding work the sealing surface if far from flat and will always cause problems.
