I have rebuilt my engine fitted a reedvalve and powerjet carb, the only other new parts are a set of rings. How many miles do I need to run them in, its a cast Indian 200 barrel.?

here we go!........................ :D

Rings only, I'd say 100 miles on 4% mineral and using short sharp hot/cold cycles.

Short trips of 3 or 4 miles on a cold engine, not pussyfooting about, and using engine braking to slow down to force the rings out into the bore.

Allow to cool and repeat.

Works for me on a rings only replacement.

stick it down the bottom of the garden, turn your tickover screw up high, and leave it for a couple of hours, job done.

I would say it would depend on how hard the metal is in your cylinder. If it's soft, they probably break in when kicking it over :o . if the metal is hard between 60-100 miles, blatting it as Bristolmod says. That way there'll be no lip at the top of the cylinder for the rings to catch on when you finally do give it a handful.
That's not going anywhere...

I always find these threads interesting - loads of different opions that obviously all work.

I once put some new rings in a P2 early in the year and never rode the bike for 3 months compltely forgot I'd put new rings in and set off to llandudno (from hartlepool) - all dual carriage way and motorway) rode it as normal and remembered when I was near chester......... So in my case 0 miles.

In reality the bore is worn to some extent and the rings should be gapped according - I give the barrel a light deglaze before I gap the rings and reassemble - so for me it would 20 miles max.

We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm
