Have ordered my new kick start shaft and piston from CamLam (for GP150 casing) and hope to get it fitted this weekend. Can anyone give me any advice on how to do this? Sticky's doesn't go into any detail. In particular I a need to know how I get the tension in the spring?

Any suggestions/advice/help much appreciated

For the GP shaft there's no way to pre-tension the spring before you fit the casing because the ramp is on the end plate rather than the casing. I used to clamp my mole grips on it and use them to rotate the shaft as I fit the casing. You can use the pedal but I find that awkward. Now I convert them to use an Li style ramp.

Thanks Rosscla, I'm tempted to have a go at fitting the Li ramp, would I have to take the end plate out to remove the bit that needs removing or would I be able to do it in situ?

No you will have to take it out,

You can't saw off the ramp in situ, you need to take it out.

And grind it down similar to Li



You can replace it with a LI version BUT if it is an Indian case it's better to keep the case and end plate together as they're machined as a matching pair, allegedly.

Thanks guys. Managed to fit the new shaft this afternoon. It works!!! After replacing 3 pistons at a cost of about £40 it would appear that it was the ebay kickstart shaft after all. I can't believe the difference, I can virtually stand on the kickstart, I can hear it click in to place as it engages as it should. At first it was catching on the first gear when the engine was running, as I couldn't fit the kickstart on the spline in a position that suited I removed the little kickstart rubber from the casing. Made up to be honest as this was the only issue that I haven't been able to fix since the rebuild

might be worth checking it isn't catching on the clutch top plate,before you finally button it up.

Too late, shes 'buttoned' up! Been out for a spin and all appears well, no noises, slips or anything untoward...........fingers crossed!!!
