Gear control shaft bush

The one where the gear control rod enters the crankcase just above the gear box area.
To cut a long story short, my mates LI has problems engaging neutral when stationary. We've tracked it down to wear in the bush area, which allows the rod to rock back and forth a tad, thus screwing up the selector mechanism.
Whilst moving, all gears select very nicely and its easy to put it into neutral whilst approaching a junction or lights etc.
My question is- can the bush be replaced with the engine in-situ and without striping down the gearbox? Its the earlier type gear box selector with the splined and bolted top mechanism.
It would appear that I simply remove the pinch bolt and lift off the top part, then ease out the bush (you can see it moving). The replace with a new bush and put the top mechanism back on.....................................
Surely a job on a Lambretta can't be this easy...........
Any advice Gents?
best
