Cheap and reliable electronic ignition

folks,

I'm going to fit electronic ignition to my Li with GP crank.

I want to spend nothing, but i want the best.

I've been advised to use MBG stuff (stator, CDI, regulator), but to buy an indian flywheel as it'll save about £140.

Any thoughts on this?

My other alternative is to buy the electrex full kit as it has advance and retard and i have a lot of experience of their kit from motorbikes. I have never had any failures of their kit and i have used lots. Problem with this kit is the price ~£350. Anyone have experience of these kits?

Yes mi duck, you have. You have answered yer own question in fairness. If you have used their stuff on bikes and found it fantastic, then why would you want to buy anything else. Please don't think I'm being sarcastic as I'm not by any means. There is the cost issue yes, but they are quality, but to be truthful, if you buy the bgm one including their flywheel it's about the same price and that's a static ignition and the stator isn't made in Germany like the flywheel is. I want an Electec, but am saving up for one along with a new kit. All in good time. cheers, Speedy.

Buy a cheap Indian full kit for around £110. Thoroughly check the stator soldering and wiring.
If it does go wrong replacing one offending part will still be much cheaper than some of the supposedly 'better kits' out there.

Just my opinion .......... 8-)

I had a Varitronic but when i had problems (carb', electrics ??) i wanted to swap the stator/flywheel to check, but it was obviously too expensive to buy a spare to find out that wasn't the problem. I also had misgivings about my Varitronic failing when 100's of miles from home on a rally....no spares on the dealer stalls !!

With all this in mind i changed to a BGM stator, AF mid-weight flywheel and M-Tech auto advance/retard. All the bits are easily available and the parts are interchangeable with other cheaper and more common parts (good in an emergency).

Just taken a BGM stator off because the lighting side was playing up,compared to the indian one i replaced it with you could see the BGM one looked better but the indian one works ok and does the job.

Yep, I had a varitronic for years and had no problems, well, until i had one where the lighting coils decided to overheat :-( £100 for a new stator? nope.

Went down the 12v dc wassel conversion.
indian electronic flywheel - £60
indian stator - already had one on a spare engine but believe they are from as little as £40 from scooter restorations.
BGM cdi - £23
Wassel regulator - £20 second hand, think they are 35 or 40 new.

So for about £150 all in I have a reliable system with easily sorted spares if needed. OH and 12v permanent lights and horn plus a charger from mobile / mp3 etc etc

A good point well made, but what I'm really after here is not a review of the quality (as I'm confident it's good enough quality for me), but rather some feedback on how easy they are to set up etc.

For example, there is one on ebay which describes it has having adjustable advance/retard, but on the Electrex website it makes no mention of this feature.

Also, apparently there was a review of these systems in Jetset recently. As a new member (last week) of the LCGB, is there any way I can find a copy of this review on line?

A straight forward Indian SIL stator seems the simplest and best bet from someone like Scooter Restorations where it's been checked. Some BGM remains a bit iffy but I am running a BGM stator in one scoot without any problems, the new BGM expensive flywheels are shite, I've been told.
