Any tips on removing this speedo gear ? I've put it under a fair bit of pressure but it wont budge. WD40'd the hell out of it, shouted at it etc. I'm scared of bending/braking/pinching the hub so thought i'd ask before getting it nice and hot.

I'm in the process of replacing the back plate, speedo gear, cable, bearings, tyres and tubes after i experienced the old S2 front hub back plate casting snap !

You'll need to either grind it off or cut it off with a junior hacksaw, but whichever you use do it carefully. When you replace it use some Loctite as the replacements can sometimes be a little slack. Your hub can be repaired as someone else has done one on here by welding it back up with a wider fork link support giving better support. You may also find, as I did, that when you try a new worm drive in the backplate, that it is slack and has lots of in/out movement. To overcome this, I placed a 6mm SS washer on the tip of the worm drive and another on the longer end so that the worm drive was central in the hole where it engages with the bit you cutting off ( from memory I had to rub down one of the washers so that it didn't all jam up when turned). Don't overdo the grease but make sure it has a decent coating and spins freely. I had trouble with the nylon type of speedo gear and got a steel one off E bay (Sundar Scoots from memory) and used a nylon worm (didn't like the idea of metal against metal jamming up in the front hub and causing an off) the nylon being the sacrificial part. Took my time with it and have a reasonably decent speedo which is accurate up to 55MPH before turning into a windscreen wiper (for accuracy I use a Garmin GPS like this which I was able to pick up from E bay for £40 held to handlebars with a velcro strap. It gives time elapsed, distance covered, average speed, max speed, etc)

I've tried 3 or 4 different speedo/worm combinations. They all turned out useless.
I get my kicks out on the floor.

Is it damaged? If it's not then just leave it. Looks like a metal one and if thats the case they are better than the plastic ones.

If you just have to remove it use a modified 2 leg puller (to fit in the 2 notches on the gear body) or a bearing splitter and carefully pull it off the hub.

Wow, that thing was HARD !
Took ages gently tickling it with the grinder. The neck of the casting is so thin i was too scared of bending it to use much force. I think to use a hacksaw on it would have taken weeks. Eventually it tapped off after grinding it thin, but what a fight.

Grumps - it was damaged so needed to go, it was an original Veglia one which had no holes in it. Now replaced with an cheaper looking metal one that came in a kit with a nylon worm.

FYI The S3 backplate turrets were around 4mm shorter than the S2 ones, and as such i had to file down one side of each shoe in order to get the top plate to fit and allow the circlips in. A right faff. Whole job took 5 solid hours with only one cup of tea. Knackering !
