I heard there were some issues fitting cyclones with MB layshafts but I can't seem to find anything on here. Was it my imagination? :?:

From what someone told me, that had an MB lay shaft and tried to put in a Cyclone, they are defiantly not compatible.

well ive got an mb layshaft and a cyclone box, cant remember the shim size but its pretty thin and has caused issues with the kickstart housing touching 1st gear, not fully resolved but may just be a case of thicker chaincase gasket, too many horror stories of snapped layshafts not to

Mark has fitted a couple of cyclones with MB layshafts and they went in OK. Like any job shimming a gearbox it can take a while but if you are good at maths you can get round it.

There are so many variables in that area - rear hub bearings, gearboxes, endplates. I am not sure why the layshaft is automatically the scapegoat.

Why would one of theirs be any different to any other?

(Not trying to start a mud slinging fight..)

Perhaps it's because the MB layshaft is longer than other shafts between the face that sits up against the hub bearing and the face on which the gears stack.

Also, there is an issue with the radius on the shafts hub bearing face at the point where it steps down to splines. This radius touches the bearing first, meaning there is a slight gap between the bearing and the face of the shaft that are meant to meet. This further exaggerates the problem of a too tall gear stack.

Another thing worth noting is the length of the boss on which the loose gears sit, it is shorter than every other shaft I could find to measure. The five speeds gear stack is taller than a four speed. I found that the first gear cog had only limited contact onto the shaft, which would have caused premature wear to the two components. As a result of these things combined, I decided not to use the MB shaft in my 5speed build.

In the end I used a brand new mec eur layshaft that is dimensionally a better copy of the original.

With an Innocenti layshaft I had to change the MB bearing for a Casa on, machine the inside of the endplate and fit an Li kickstart ramp - so there are a few issues fitting with different components it seems, worth it in the end I think though :D :D

remove the piston assembly out of the shaft and fit without a gasket to see if any material can be machined off the shaft that is catching the gear, maybe reposition the ramp and put some spacers under it!

i'm no expert here but i had the pleasure of bumping into Dean and Mickey Boy from Riminini Lambretta at Armandos a while back... they were discussing the differences in layshafts...they loose fitted the selector and gears to an innocenti, mec ,casa layshafts...each one had different results with fitting issues...
i'm sure it's all explained in their manual... or from your appointed dealer... mines on order....
