having trouble setting up a Saigon 5 plate cassette type clutch. after fitting its very hard to get into gear and once ridding its just as hard to select gears, its like the clutch is not fully engaging . I have tried over adjusting the cable, this has made it a little better. also when assembling the clutch do you fully tighten the allen screws ?. cable is brand new and nylon lined and is routed correctly. also the clutch lever is very hard to pull in, a bit like when you used to double spring and use a centre spring. should be nice and light should it not ?. was using st 90 gear oil, should I be using a lighter grade ?. I need to get this sorted as its up for sale. cheers simon

Ask Pat at SSC. I've got one and it's great. I fully tightend the bolts down that compress the springs. Is it catching on the kickstart?

cheers for the info,

no its not catching anywhere

just taken gear box out to check everything is ok in there, and it seems fine apart from the shim under the layshaft is not keeping 4th gear from rubbing the case when turned by hand , no end plate on. checked selector arm alignment and this is ok. tried selecting gears with the clutch out and gearbox in by rolling scoot up down and seemed clunky to get in, but its all new parts apart from the gearbox and I put a new sliding dog in and a heavy duty selector spring in. when I built this motor a few years ago I used a heavy duty selector spring and new sliding dog and it took a few miles to free off abit, so I am guessing the same for this rebuild .

its just the clutch at the moment. I have both types of springs, first try was with the heavy duty and have just put in the ones that came with the clutch.

I have shreaded most type of clutches and clutch plates in this motor, most reliable and longest lasting was a 4 plate set up with surflex green compound corks mb heavy duty springs and a big centre spring. this was hard work when riding through towns or in slow moving traffic and it still slipped at high revs.

don't want to give up on the Saigon set up as it should be spot on.what grade of oil are you using ?
