slot some pennies or washers in between a few of the coils, hook it over, then pull them out.
or fit the spring as you're fitting the stand

funnily enough I've just done a mates this afternoon.
1) Hook it on the top
2) put a strong screwdriver in the lower hook
3) Put the end of the screwdriver under the attachment on the stand
4) Pull the spring down using the stand attachment as a fulcrum
5) The lower hook of the spring will slip over the stand attachment
Be warned- the spring is strong and it may slip off the screwdriver. Mind your eyes/ body/ fingers- it hurts

there is a proper tool for this ,it is like a screwdriver but the blade is curved,i personally use a screw driver guided by a pair of pliers ,when the spring 'twangs' so does your temper!

As said already, by far the best way is to fit the spring to the stand and frame and then fit stand bolts.
