Rear hub and SIP rims

I'm after some advice. I've bought some SIP rims and while I'm waiting for them to arrive thought I'd remove the hub studs in preperation.

I know they're left hand threads, so got a spanner on the first one, but it wojldn't budge. So i gave it a knock with the old 'manually assisted percussion intsrument' (a big hommer!) and it moved. However, it wouldn't screw out and then i noticed that it wasn't threaded at all, but had splines on it, so i now have a hub with three splined studs, one stripped hole and a SIP rim on its way with some oversized left handed studs.

As I'm not that mechaically gifted, what are my options?

Any advice greatly recieved.

Unless someone comes up with a really clever fix, you may well be looking for an alternative hub.

The hubs with the screw-out studs have a hex-head on the engine-side of the hub. These can be a pig to remove (though there are a number of tricks you can apply), but I guess the hub you tried to use did not have the hex-head on the reverse.

However, you presumeably purchased the SIP rims because they are safer. Keep your safety-hat on when you think about what to do with respect to the hub. Broken hubs hurt, so don't skimp on aquiring one that is fit for purpose.

unfortunatly some hubs do have press fit studs ,can you tell me/us what type hub you have ?

..... and if you do buy a new hub ask the seller not to fit the studs first. I usually fit them before sending out so that I know that there's no issues with them.

Tip for anyone fitting or removing hex headed studs it to grind down a 12mm socket so that the edges are flush with the surface. For extra clearance most hubs will have thin headed hex studs which are VERY easily rounded with a normal socket. Preferably use a 6 sided socket rather than the multi cornered sockets as the 6 sided ones grip the flats rather than the corners.

The hub is for a GP. It was new when purchased about two years ago and has studs with short hex headsxon the back, which is what led me to think that they were threaded.

I've just knocked out the other 3 out without problem. I'm wondering whether i can tap them with an M10 x 1 LH tap, but i don't have one and it may be as cheap to buy a new hub as a tap kit. Bloody frustrating though!

Haven't even looked at the front yet - could work out expensive!

in the back of my mind i think MB can tap them

is it innocenti or sil hub ? as im thinking it was indian gp hubs that were not tapped

The Italian Remade hubs are the one with push in studs MEC???

the push in stud is a smaller diameter than the conventional M10 x 1.00 L /H thread, so the hub can be drilled and tapped to take a SIP stud

LH M10 x 1 off eBay for about a tenner from china, takes a week or two to come but does the job

So the cheapest option maybe to buy an M10 x 1 lh tap. Whar Size drill do i need to use to drill out the hub? and what tap do i need to buy - taper, second, plug or all of em?

God help me when i start on the front hub with Scootrs disc..........might leave that as a split rim with a tube!
