I've just rebuilt my Mugello with new crank and bearings and having got it all back together I went to kick it over and it acted like it had no compression. On closer inspection it isn't that it got no compression it's the clutch slipping. I've run up and down the road trying to bump it and aside from a bit of drag it doesn't turn the engine over.

When I was putting it all back together I had a feeling I wasn't getting much movement at the clutch arm and when using he spanner trick to move the arm for cable fitting it didn't seem to move very far but I couldn't remember how much movement there was so thought I was being paranoid. I have just completely disconnected the clutch cable and there is still no drive.

I have refilled the chaincase with oil but are my symptons because the clutch was left exposed with no oil whilst I finished the rebuild? I didn't strip the clutch or gearbox but fitted a new cush drive spring.

Any help really appreciated as I'm stumped. Thanks in advance.

clutch should be OK- just confirm that you didn't touch it at all during the rebuild please.

You state you've fitted a new cush drive spring- my money is on that being the culprit.

Either its the wrong spring (there are 2 different lengths apparently) or the actual mechanism has been fitted wrongly/ crap remade stuff

Definitely haven't touched the clutch. I did check the cush drive before bolting everything back together (I only replaced the spring) but I may have to have another look at it. I still can't understand why I've got so little movement on the clutch arm.

If it's a gp side casing I would check you have put the bronze pressure bush in right, it may need turning 180 degrees.

I checked the brass plunger and it seemed one way round it would'nt return flush into the casing so would apply constant pressure to the clutch. I put it in the other way so that it could return fully into the casing.

I'll double check but doubt it's this.

Cheers

Thanks guys that's great. I'm just off into the garage to get the chaincase off for the 5th time in the last two days after I've faffed about draining the oil out again!

i no you didnt touch the clutch but it does sound like a clutch problem to me.not doubting anyones comments but if your cush drive tophat is not seated right your side casing will rock on top of cush and will not locate properly.
