My thought is.....700 and odd quid for a 5 speed gearbox is a LOT of money. And if the person buying it needs to pay to have it fitted too, and buy the handle bar gearchange/alternative 1st gears and new sprockets/chain etc then they could be looking at nearly a grand when all said n done.....? And for what gain?

I understand that it may 'stay in the power' a bit better through the mid range......but apart from that, what's the point? I could be completely wrong, but if you are already running a close ratio box, and have the scooter geared for max top speed anyway...... its not actually gonna make your top speed any higher is it? Because a scooter with say 20bhp can only pull through 'wind resistance' to achieve a given speed which is a result of gearing and rpm......plus bhp vs wind resistance to pull that speed/rpm/gearing.

So, as far as I can see £700-£1000 to get through the mid range a bit quicker? And dont get me wrong......I'd be happy with that, if it were say £150-£200 quid.

Plus, I think the article said its only tested up to 25bhp.....which means those few scooterists that might need it the most (the go faster types - the scooter racers - those with peaky tunes etc) have no guarantee that if they spend all that dosh, that it won't shred just as quick as every other gearbox....? So what's the benefit for the remaining masses?

Like I say though, I could be wrong......maybe in ten years we'll all have them fitted.....lol.

If you've worked out that it's not going to help then the only reason to have one is one-upmanship
or like me you like shiny new things :lol: :lol:
TS1 and PX stay in the garage (future barn finds) out on the GTS 300 when I go out on a scooter.

If you`ve ever had a performance two stroke (6 speed) then you will know how good more gears closed together are,my old Kwack 250 KR1S felt like i hadn`t changed up a gear but it was in the power all the time.Theres a lot of brettas that dont need a 5speed but its never a case of "do i need it" is it? You simply just "want it!" People will buy it for sure,if people got bucks to spend 3-4k on a motor then a 5speed box is peanuts.My chick gets a good bonus at Christmas so will have a word.

Yup, I know what you mean...I too owned a KR1. But then also, if I recall correctly the power was a claimed 60bhp, it redlined at about 12000rpm, had Kwak powervalves (KIPS?) and was reasonably aerodynamic....lol. The tune on those as standard was more than 'peaky'......without a close ratio box it would fall on its arse. Whereas most Lambrettas peak at about 6000-8000rpm, they have a broader 'enduro' type power band, and thier internals struggle to cope with more than 30bhp.

So like you say....it'll probably be the people that want one and can afford one that own them, more than any real 'need' for them?

Could you get aftermarket P/Vs for them? I had Dave Cooper ones in my RS. They weren't cheap.. but they did make it a lot smoother.
