I have a series 2 running on points. I fitted an Indian 185 Kit to the bike about 40 miles ago. Last week I started hearing "mini pop" sounds like mini back fires, but they seemed to subside once the bike was warmed up. Last Thursday I started her up and went approx 20 ft and she just died...I thought I had turned the fuel off or had went into reserve as there was no real noise. I pushed her home, changed the plug and tried to start her.....a big back fire about the 3rd kick, and then started the next kick, but lasted no more than 5 seconds and it died and then refused to start. I took of the flywheel and replaced the "slipped" woodruff key......checked the timing via the light bulb method, and stuck the flywheel back on...started first kick, but died after a few seconds.....flywheel off, and the woodruff key was sheared...this has now happened a further 2 times since, and I am lost as to why this keep happening.
Ideas, advice & theories most welcome.

the taper on flyweel or crankshaft are possiblee damaged from the flywheel coming loose; the key locates it in its correct place but the taper holds them; very fine lapping paste may be the cure,

There are no signs of damage at all....no wear signs, gouges, scrapes, or anything like that. The bike does not run long enough to do any serious damage ffs perhaps I have a dud batch of woodruff keys ?????Muppet wrote:the taper on flyweel or crankshaft are possiblee damaged from the flywheel coming loose; the key locates it in its correct place but the taper holds them; very fine lapping paste may be the cure,
Muppet,
Yes now you mention, I saw some woodruf keys that was to high when they were in the keyway; it stopped the flyweel from sitting tight on the taper; maybe it's the wooruf key you've bought is to far out of the slot when it's sat in the keyway,

Had that, could not understand why woodruf was not seating correctly a mate mentioned the key is more a safety measure if torqued correctly (should not move ) but we all read more in to it than usually that there is. Anyway back to thread fitted flywheel without key torqued it + a few lbs ran around the block a few times not mad but OK looked at woodruf flatted it with 1000 wet'n'dry a few times fitted snug no probs since (Remade Parts love'em) maybe just a thought.Muppet wrote:Yes now you mention, I saw some woodruf keys that was to high when they were in the keyway; it stopped the flyweel from sitting tight on the taper; maybe it's the wooruf key you've bought is to far out of the slot when it's sat in the keyway,
