5 Plate Clutch problems.....

Can anyone help...
I've just fitted a newfren 5 plate clutch with 1.0mm steels to my GP, when I fitted it I had an idea it wasnt going to work properly as when I compressed the clutch to get the circlip in, it was fully compressed & the circlip was tight to get in.
All rebuilt, started up & put into gear trying to pull forward & engine dies adjust clutch to max same thing, am I missing something ?? Asked when I bought it would it fit standard basket etc & told yes & from what I can find in the searches with 1.0mm plates it should.

Any ideas ???
