Hi,

what's the difference between 48mm Avanti Clubman and a 48mm AF Clubman for use on the Avanti kit, other than about £150?

Does the Avanti have loads of re-worked internals, but keeping the "standard" look, or is the money in a completely bespoke pipe?

I don't have the kit yet, but working out the options and cost

cheers

Ron Moss gets the AF Clubman's and like you suggest alters the internals. My Avanti also has a slip joint fitted which i don't think comes on a standard AF Clubman.

they get the indian big bore and rework the internals of the box, and put a different header pipe on.

they are quiet and rev on and on.

Thanks for quick replies,

just read another thread that recommends a Franspeed for the Avanti kit at 22bhp. By comparison the AF Clubman produces 14bhp! Are there performance results for the 48mm Avanti exhaust available yet please

Cheers

if i remember rightly i posted a dyno comparison on the avanti exhaust against a clubman and two ther pipes back to back - only problem it was a detuned ts1 not rons kit but it will give you a ballaprk for comparisons

I have tried both the AF 48 and the big bore Avanti clubmans on a Rapido 225 (30mm PHBH and SX200 gearing). The AF produced power low in the rev range and the Avanti higher (more lilke a crude expantion pipe).

I also tried the Avanti on a tuned TS1 and it produced 20bhp at 8000 revs but only 10.8 ft-lbs over 5600 to 7000 revs.

The Avanti is a great fit and the sprung slip joint will make it last. The Af is noisey and not as good a fit. But lets face it, there are so many factors that have a bearing which exhaust it really depends what you want to use it for and what your set up is at the moment.

Hi, Mick Dale is right on the money as far as how they are made, the Avanti Clubman was not produced for the kit, I kept getting asked for a performance clubman, one that would REV.

On the Avanti kit, on Diablo’s Dyno it made 15ft/lbs torque and a shade under 20bhp.
A clubman will never be as good as using the right expansion pipe also there is no point in using something like an Avanti Clubman on a standard engine, you might as well pour your money down the drain.

We are not making any more of the original Avanti Clubmans, we have two prototypes being made at this moment in time, one will perform similar and will be a direct replacement for higher revving tuned engines and the other made to compliment the torque of the Avanti kit.

Both will be made in a factory and will incorporate a baffle system.

There is a limit of around 20bhp that you can obtain from a clubman type exhaust with a baffle system, a couple of years ago I had one on JB’s Dyno that went up to 20 bhp, worth around 22 on Diablo’s but there were no baffles in it.

So what we are trying to achieve now is to get more torque for the Avanti kit, when we have done all of the evaluations we will give you an update but it will be a few months away yet.

Having said that if you look at Sticys report, using a JL3, similar to a Franspeed tour it made 20ft/lbs torque
you are never going to get that from any clubman, but we are going to try and get a bit closer.

^... I watch with interest, however, your response almost seems to play down the performance gain to be had by your clubman, along with other clubman pipes that continue to rev considerably further/higher than the standard AF type clubman or SIL big-bore. Whilst the RM clubman, RS clubman, Gori, revvy Tino Ancillotti, etc will not make the torque of a suitable expansion they do allow for such a pipe to marry to a revvier kit, whereas the standard type clubman will simply strangle a revvy motor to death! The low rev ceiling of the standard clubman on a revvy kit results in the worst of both worlds; the kit doesn't make power at low revs and the clubman will not allow it to reach the revs where the kit wants to make power further up the range. Motors like this are horrible to use :(

At least a revvy clubman will allow the motor to continue to use the higher rev range of a revvy kit (if not make much torque). I like the way that you are looking to produce a clubman that would cater for the higher revving market and one that makes as much torque as possible, without strangling revs too much. I used to have a straight through 48mm VW clubman that performed very well on a TS1225 but the noise was DAFT! I'll be interested to see what you come up with as I think that there is a good market for such a product.
