Hi folks.
I'm just about to slowly start the resto of a 150 SX Special. It didn't come with an engine so i'm wondering what the best thing is to do. I haven't yet got a budget or timescale.
I want to run a decent motor but i don't know enough yet about RB or muggy kits. obviously these are expensive, so should i buy an engine casing and do it myself, that way i can do it slow time and not have the initial outlay of a full engine.
But is there a limit to what i can do with an Sx engine casing with regards to heads, exhausts etc.
It's a bit of an ambiguous question but your opinions please on one versus the other.

Any small block kit will fit a small block As standard or if you have the block converted to 200 stud spacing any large block kit will fit

personally I'd try to get hold of an SX150 casing- that way the complete bike retains more of its original "pedigree" (also they are a lot less expensive than 200 casings).

You can then build up the engine to your spec. There's many "small bore" kits available that will walk all over a standard 200 engine- also you can put in your choice of gearbox.

It all depends what you want the engine to do for you

Thanks for that. I will try and get hold of an engine casing. i just missed out on one on ebay last week!!
I think i will go down the route of building my own and getting the bits gradually.
Can you recommend a particualr type of smallbore kit? And what determins the choice of gearbox?

you will get different opinions on kits

but for my money, a mugello 186 kit is the way to go...

have fitted three of these to different scooters, and the performance is great... and can be used straight out of the box....

How is he Mugello in comparison to the Casa kit guys? I plan to run a clubman and 22mm through the airbox. I like the look of the RT195 too but not the price!

Lammydave. What sort of carb and exhaust are suitable for a muggy. Kit.
And are they suitable for a small bore engine casing?

I think he uses 28mm Dellortos and Ancillotti clubmans.
Mugello normally available in 186 for small block casings and 200 & 225 for large block casings.
