mag flange tight on crank ?

Just putting a brand new engine together (parts sourced from different suppliers), i'm going by Sticky's book and he says "be carefull when fitting the mag flange, check it doesn't tighten the crank".....yep it does but he doesn't give a solution !! what now ?? I'm thinking the crank isn't pulled through enough on the g/box side, but i've used a fair bit of torque pulling it through, i'm qbviously concerned about doing damage if i'm pulling against a dead stop. The mag flange just nips on the last 1/2 turn of the nuts. Could it be the "new" mag flange needs a touch taking off ? or is using 2/3 gaskets an option....sat here with spanners awaiting reply !!

Might it be the oil seal retaining plate or a pinched seal stiffening the crank?

Had the same problem myself a while back on a new build engine,I don't think you'll find its the mag housing.In the end I asked a well known tuner ( he comes on here) and he gave me some very good advice as I was thinking I needed to "pad" it out with a couple of gaskets.
1) Have you checked the drive side bearing is fully home and that the oil seal plate is fully home.
2) last one I did I did it using the puller to pull the crank through and that's when I ran into the same problem you describe,so after taking advice " When fitting the crankshaft you do not have to pull the crankshaft in, put the flywheel nut on and tap it in gently with a wooden mallet, turning the crank at the same time, you will hear the different sound when it is fully home" on a PM I had off OAP,worked a treat.I'll post the link (hopefully it'll work) http://www.forums.ilambretta.com/viewto ... =2&t=26861

This is what i would do first,take the crank out then see if the mag flange can be fitted correctly if it goes on ok then you know its a problem with the crank installation :D
