pinking sounds like someone riding a bicycle over bubble wrap but a bit more distant as its within the barrel/head and usualy at a particular throttle position. can sometimes be confused with a lose head cowling or a bin liner over a sleeping bag blowing in the wind......depending on how your lid makes you hear things. its caused by the fuel detonating itself due to heat.

four stroking feels like the engine is struggling and firing only on every second spark. so for example if you have a too big main jet then as you open the throttle in may bog down a judder a bit then clear as you back the throttle off.

pinking is the dangerous one, caused by bad jetting/timing/seal gone/lose head/exhast come lose or cracked/ carb rubber split or petrol made out of polish cabbage water. if you hear it back off pull the clutch in and pull over......it took 100 yards for my ts1 to go bang when my head came lose.

Thanks, clear as mud now. :D :D Re: pinking, is it more likely at slower or faster speeds or could it be either. At slower speeds, in the lower gears, it feels like my scoot runs rougher, feels like it vibrates a bit. Just not sure if it is pinking. At full throttle it seems ok.

Pinking is more a noise, like washers rattling in a biscuit tin.

im trying to avoid clouding your mud....

pinking is associated with leanness and heat while under load/acceleration. it tends to be a bit more responsive and lively when it does it as the heat gives better power. having said that if its super lean then it will not pull.

you can use your choke, when it feels as you describe flick the choke on and if it feels better then its likely to be lean but if its worse then its rich.

what color is the plug?

4 stroking it the machine gun stutter that most 2 stokes do to some extent usually when you roll off the throttle or are bimbling through town at 30 mph

Going on the chart in this link it is somewhere between numbers 6 and 11. So that's not too bad.
