on the second photo you can just see the outline of the cush drive washer, the sidecasing is an Indian GP type.Ran like a dream last weekend,no oil leaks and the split isn't all the way through. As a precaution I am going to fit a spare sidecasing I've got in the shed somewhere, the cush drive is correctly torqued, the only thing I can think of is to use a thicker gasket on the sidecasing ,would a 1mm or 2mm do the trick?,or is the 2mm too thick? would this affect the clutch a lot?at the moment the gasket is a "standard" one
Cheers Dave

should be plenty of clearance on the cush drive ,are you certain that the splines are aligned correctly ??

Oil thrower???

Spanish ones are thicker and are used sometimes to align the front and rear of the chain (if its out the "correct" way)

Have you got a thick thrower?

Even so as mentioned above, there should be ample space between the casing and the front sprocket set up (unless the casing has been cast too thick)

PLEASE CHECK YOUR FRONT CUSH DRIVE / SPROCKET SET-UP. The same thing happened to my mate on a recent C2C. It ended up drilling a neat hole thru the casing, spitting out the bolt and all the engine oil.
Chancs are as Ric says the castellated top cap don't line up with the splines on the large drive shaft itself and you've simply torqued them up on the p155. I dry fit these and mark with a scribe so I know they'll line up, then repeatedly bounce a hammer off them as I tighten to check it is actually bouncing back. If the hammer has a dull thud and doesn't bounce back then start again. You'll have probabaly knackered the castellated top cap.

the problem is the spring holds the top cap off the splines untill you try to tighten the centre bolt

Cheers lads ,just back from the shed, soullad,& ric ,you're right, the top cap has gone on the pi55  how the hell it did IOW last week I don't know (600+ miles round trip).I'd given it at once over about a month back and even did the "springy" hammer test all seemed OK,but now obviously not.The scribe advice is a bloody good idea.Thank you all for your input, its what makes this forum so good. Cheers Dave.

PS looks like Casa Corrado will be getting another PM
