chrome ring head or not

Can you add a non chrome ring head set to a chrome ring bike by taking a bit off the bottom of the head set - or is the stearing lock in the wrong place etc--

There the same apart from there is more meat below the steering lock on a non chrome ring. You can machine it off but its hassle as the front of the headset intrudes into the base of the bottom headset.

It's rather easier to remove the chrome ring and replace the top bearing. If you care about having a steering lock, it just means welding a small piece of steel on the fork tube.
