what symtoms have people had that they can put down to bad fuel ?

Reason i ask is that i`m stumpped at the minute.

P200 was running fine but due for a rebore - decised to get Harry Barlow to tune a top end. put it all together -only other difference was a SIP fast flow fuel tap. Went out to start running in and did 30miles with no issues went on reserve so filled up at the nearest garage which was a supermarket and went home (about 0.5mile). Went back to it the weekend after to do some more miles. It was a t*£t to start, wouldnt tick over, would only run with choke - so i started the usual things - cleaned carb, new plug/lead/cap,new cdi, new stator no difference - started to have a suspicion the clutch side seal had gone so drained the g/box -all seemed okay. Thought stuff it ripped engine out and stripped it - there was nothing wrong the seal so i rebuilt it with all new seals and bearings - fired it up no difference.
went back in garage tonight and done a bit more - agin a pig to start ,cleaned carb, drained g/box oil to check again, blocked the clutch breather up again no difference - however it will now tick over but it is still not as crisp and responsive as would expect and just doesn`t feel/sound right and it occasionally backfires through the carb if the filter is removed

will drain the fuel tomorrow and try some new from a known brand

any thoughts ?

Supermarkets have admits to using bio ethanol in their petrol but they should sign this to say so.
Ethanol like alchohol requires bigger jets and higher compression to work properly so who knows?
