The wiring TO the battery for charging only needs to be normal vehicle wire as sold in Halfords about 7 amps rating, same sort of size as used in your scooter loom.

Good luck

Lads,
I just took my stator off my GP to do this conversion.
However the colours do not match the stator shown.
It looks to me that the white wire is connected to the earth already.
I have a ducati stator, would this be what is used in a GP Electronic?
If so would you still do the conversion & where does the extra connection go?

Just de-solder the coil wire only from the earth tag and solder a yellow wire to the end of the coil wire and run this up to the yellow on your new regulator.
Turn On, Tune In, Cop out!

^... is that the case with this stator? I could do with looking at how the wiring of this 80s AF 12V AC stator differs to the common SIL stator but I'm trying to get my head around an issue.... that being that the white on this stator serves the dual purpose of earthing the lighting circuit + earthing the CDI (white goes off to CDI). If this wht was unsoldered and resoldered solely to the end of the lighting coils, not to earth, then it would only be good for taking to the yellow of a DC rectifier... leaving the nothing going to the wht of the CDI?

I assume that investigation would show SIL stators having a wht earthing the LT coil + pickup + going off to the CDI from the earth tag next to the LT coil, which is where this AF stator differs. This stator needs the wht left soldered to the earth tag and an additional wire run from the unsoldered end of the lighting coils.

Does that make any sense?

Adam

EDIT: Yes, look at the photo of the SIL stator on page 1 of this thread and you'll see how it differs to the 80s AF 12V AC stator discussed above.

My original unmolested AF is exactly the same as the one above -

This one is an SIL one that was a bit messed about with when I got it but I rewired it similar to the AF with the additional yellow for the DC

I'm trying to think this through...If the white earths the CDI to the stator and the CDI is earthed to the frame and the engine is earthed to the frame isn't the white wire (in both cases) actually redundant?

To change the AF one I'd need to unsolder the end of the lighting coil and connect that to a new yellow wire which would give me the DC conversion and the white would simply be connected to a different earth tag.

It's belt and brasses but safer to have them all imho.

don't forget the braided earth from the fan cowl to frame, you can never have to many earths
