Project X

Finally got this project finished, it was the last engine I built before I took up my new position at Scootering.

I knew I'd never get round to doing it for myself, so offered it to Gav Watson....he is the new owner.

Sadly I've not had time to Dyno it until today, but that didn't stop Gav taking it to a sprint meeting to get a feel for it! He had a few problems with various basics on the rearsets, and stripped a gear cog trying to bump it off....lol. He was also running it with incorrect (heavily rich) carb settings and over geared a bit....but it was good practice for him until it was set up right.

So when we did the first run on the Dyno today, it was only putting out 32bhp.....and due to the gearing it was taking a while to build up in 3rd. But we got there in the end. After a few of Gavs usual 'bad luck' issues we dialled it in at 42bhp and 25ft-lbs.

I think it's lacking a little 'off pipe' power at the bottom end, but after Gavs next sprint outing where he will be trying different sprocket combinations, it'll be coming back for Dyno day 2 with an m-tech to tweak the bottom end.

Avanti head, re-worked by Darrell Taylor. PipeDesign Hornet. RB252 kit ported by myself. Standard reeds, manifold and piston. 62/116 crank. 39mm Dellorto carb. AF light flywheel de-finned and machined. SIL stator, static 17 deg BTDC. AF close ratio gearbox. LTH 7 plate clutch.

Interesting to note the AF close ratio box... I've often wondered about these but heard of the odd issue with breakage/chipping so have never bothered to stump up the cash. If they are good enough for this....

... although I guess that this will not be expected to do 1000s of motorway miles.

Nice work and results :)
