Is that not a bit of a generalisation? There must be
100's of Lammy's running on an x7 needle or have I missed something?

In my experience X7 needles are too weak for most mid range set ups but every bike is different but it would not be my first choice of needle.
Could be a combination of a little bit lean in the mid range on the needle and then an agusto running at say 20/21 degrees (depending how it has been set) at low revs agitating the issue.
All the new gizmos are excellent for performance but it does mean you have to be more exact in your set up. a lot of people set the agustos to run at say 24 degrees going down to say 17 but in my personal opinion that is too advanced at lower revs and certainly too advanced on high performance kits for touring....
Just my opinion :D

100's of Lammys getting away with X7 needle because they are running very rich in the low and high range so the weak spot is covered up. Ignition retarder means that at the revs being used its too far advanced making matters worse.

^... there is no 'best'... at least not without knowing exactly what your setup is and what your specific motor requires. Ignition timing, auto advance/retard, compression, pipe choice, cc, barrel spec', and a whole host of other factors will influence what is 'best' for your motor, which might be quite different to the next.

The biggest factor governing how the needle responds is the atomiser that it is paired with, so the 'best' needle question is a bit of a chicken and egg scenario... what's best for use with which atomiser?

Isn't that more likely to effect the gearbox?

On that particular engine a couple of combos that are likely to work well are AS266 with X2 needle or AV266 with X13 needle.
