not much measuring 8" or more around here mate :P
got the pipe [probably enough to have four goes at it, for a tenner cash], smoothed it inside with some emery on a long drill bit, tidied up the flanges, so now [with some heat] the pipe can slide down reasonably easy.
next I about to pack the end, some metal mesh round the tube [to stop the wadding being blown out], then the wadding [loft insulation], but not too much, and wrap some aluminium tape around it to keep it in place when I slide the can down...

Well I can confirm that my pipe will take at least 10" down the end without any issue. :o
I poked a chop stick down there and it didn't hit anything. :)

thanks Stokie, so that's pretty much into the expansion then, the can is about 270mm, I'll find the long drill...
I've just put a hairdryer on the end and heat was coming out of the first holes in the larger bit, but the hairdryer burnt out before I could complete my tests. I haven't told the missus yet.

A neighbour who's getting on a bit told me when he had a couple of Lammies back in the day   and he threw petrol in his pipe and set fire to it to clear it out!

:shocking: thanks Bilko, I'm probably still at the more measured approach just now, explosives will be a last resort. I'd really like to use this pipe, it's a piece of scootering history to me.

Yeah it'll drop right thru the silencer and hit the bend in the tai pipe

getting late now to be banging in the suburbs.
I could only find a long enough masonary drill which just won't do, sure I've got a long bit for metal somewhere, but may pop to B&Q tomorrow. on the plus side i did find a set of needle files that have been missing for ages.
but I did bash about a bit, and definitely moved something... at one point i had a punch stuck down there, and some soot came out of the other end... so something's giving... i just hope it's not something that is meant to be there...
I'll persevere for a bit more this week...

here is a very rough and ready pic of what i remember the mickek insides looking like.. i have tried to do it as a cross-section.. as you will see there is a 'block' about a third of the way through the silencer which fordces the gasses in and out of the concentric tubes before it goes through the final bit.. its also worth noting thet the silence tube (or 'stinger') actually finishes inside the chamber at the point of the start of the reverse cone. incidentally the red marks indicat the gas flow :D

wow thanks for taking the time to do that lofty, really useful, and means that I need to put the drill away... because that "block" is where mine is...
hmmm... that might explain their characteristic sound...
there is a small hole in it now, I can run a gear cable through the pipe...
think I'll sling it back together, only padding the final section and see what I can rev to...
