Same as above Mr Alan Terry (Diablo) fitted my Mk1 or first batch cyclone box and I was using one of marks very nice layshafts, all works well together and 2500 miles so far
TS1 and PX stay in the garage (future barn finds) out on the GTS 300 when I go out on a scooter.
I know I’ll get there and back

I believe that the issue is the distance between the bore hole for the selector balls and the flanged area of the layshaft that top gear rests against. The gearbox was set up to work with Innocenti shafts, but this dimension appears to be different on various brands of aftermarket layshaft, which can cause a problem.

The check for this issue is to fit the 5-speed selector to the shaft and put it in the neutral position in a vice. Fit all the loose gear cogs in the correct order ('facing kickstart side up') and try to spin all the loose gears on the shaft. If they all spin its fine, if there is a clicking noise or they won't spin then there is a problem. The choices are to either re-machine the layshaft or to get a different one.

i have managed to fit this combination and i did need to use one of the supplied shims, the smaller 0.3mm i think to raise the loose gears to the cluster. this is with a casa hub bearing which i had to use as had issues with all other makes. care has to be taken as the first gear will be very close to the endplate, i had to use one of the thinnest shims 1.omm iirc at this end. if i do it again i would grind a channel in the back of the end plate for the kickstart teeth.there may also be issues with the kickstart as i had the one which is also mentioned in the manual i.e TS made in italy, and i have ground down both ends of the piston holder, to be fair this would have been a problem with a standard box but is more pronounced with the cyclones limitd clearance.

As far as I can see our layshafts are machined correctly where the selector balls fit and where the 4/5th gears sit setting up neutral. We've checked as many Innocenti/Spanish/SIL layshafts as we can get our hands on. Our MB layshafts are machined shorter by a bit where the gears sit, this was done for a reason as some gears end up sitting lower than the layshaft, making setting up the gear shim impossible, so we addressed this issue. This has nothing to do with gear selection. Rear hub bearings/machining in the casing will effect gear selection in 5th and the gear shimming. I've fitted a couple of DRT 5 speed gearboxes with all MB parts - bearing/layshaft in Italian and SIL casings and no issues at all. All our parts work perfect with our MB designed gearboxes and again no issues at all. Casings where the bearing sits DO alter and rear hub bearings do alter both effecting layshaft positioning effecting gear selection/shimming. Our 1st batch layshaft was 0.5mm longer on the shaft affecting the height where the layshaft sat, meaning the gear shim would have needed to be 0.5mm thinner. We addressed this issue at the time around 6 years ago. Apart from that I've managed to clear up peoples issues over the phone and email and it was never the layshaft. But if there is a genuine issue just contact us. I could suggest that the odd 5 speed gear selector is more likely incorrect based on numbers sold.
