P200e engine rattle

I have inspected the Cush drive bearing and checked to see if there is and loose or snapped springs by taking it out and seeing if there is any rattling but nothing, I take it if the Cush drive springs were snapped it would snatch or be difficult/clunky to put in gear? but gear change has always been smooth, the noise is most prominent around the top of the flywheel where the carb bolts onto the casing, which makes me think it might be the crank which can be seen when the carb is removed, I can't hear the noise very well by the clutch side where the Cush drive springs are located. The very big hammer is getting closer to this scooter every hour that passes, I must have tried everything, engine been out twice and everything looks fine, totally baffled.???

First thing is to remove everything from the glovebox. Then double check that there is oil in the gearbox. Then I would one piece at a time remove (then replace) the airbox cover, the flywheel cover, the gear selector lid, and the cylinder shroud to ensure that nothing simple eliminates the rattle.
Then I would swap the exhaust.
Then if none of the above 8 simple things was the issue I would check the clutch, cush, bearings, and shim on the gear stack.

The glovebox is empty, I have tried everything now including taking everything off the outside of the engine inspecting them, and replacing them securely, including the exhaust, but the rattle is still there, It sounds like a metallic chain that is loose and increases with revs, but is very annoying. I feel better now after hitting the scooter with a hammer but the rattle is still there and I'm sure I heard the vespa laughing at one point, I think I'll threaten it with fire & theft insurance see what happens it the only thing left to do I think???

it could be a worn carb slide ,just press it down with a screwdriver to check if the noise goes away

Just checked the carb slide and all is fine, slides nicely with no catching and no rattling just as it should be, checked it whilst running too and still no rattling from the carb at all, I really don't won't to take the engine out again although I can't find anything out of place when I toolkit out last time anyone else got any ideas, anythings worth a go.

I've just repaired a T5 cush drive which uses 2 sets of springs like the P2 and although it didn't rattle several of the large springs were broken but the small inner springs held them together.From experience it's very rare to find an undamaged one and that even completely rebuilt motors can still be noisy,presumably why Piaggio fitted a cover to the T5's casing. I have never been that keen of the flywheel side bearing on the PX range ,the T5 uses the same as a SX Lamby and is more robust and quieter.

Taken the engine out again third time this week, I'm going for the Guinness book of record how fast I can take it out, The Cush drive springs were all taken out expecting all of them to be snapped but they were all fine, but at least that's another thing I won't have to for a while again.
One thing I noticed and hadn't before was the crankshaft looks like it has been rubbing against the casing with clear evidence of this on both parts, it has been rubbing against the flywheel side hence the noise from that area, I have replaced both bearings either side of the crank and allowed the 16mm from the shoulder as stated, is there any way of resolving this without having to buy a new crank or casings, both sides were torques down as it says in the manual, do you think it's worth torquing the clutch nut a bit more to see if this might clear it?????

If you have the motor built up but without the top end on you can rotate the crank and see if it is twisted causing it to rub.Tightening the clutch nut up more will not do anything once the crank is up to the bearing it can't move anymore, was it tight to start with? Shame you had to pull the cush drive apart but as you say,it's one less thing to think about.

finding this rattle prob will always be a process of elimination ,and by that way you will find the cause eventually i hope
